Suffering today for too much celebrating yesterday. Glad we didn't hit the road today.
Started looking at the route map again and finally realized (I knew it all along but didn't think it a problem) that we have 2200 miles to make in 3 days. That is average of 733 miles a day. We have ridden that far on AK1 but it relies on no delays and relatively good weather. In addition, we will be in the mountains at least half of that distance. This puts more importance on tomorrows ride. If we make the 1000 mile iron butt it will take the pressure off for the last 2 days.
The only impact if we don't make it in 3 days is we both have scheduled bike service on the 5th with tire changes. The ferry leaves on the 7th at 6 pm so no worries making that. We would have to try and reschedule the bike service to Friday but no guarantees. I have a set of new tires waiting at Dave/Susan's so I could tie them on back of the bike and get them replaced in AK somewhere but that will be a pain.
Weather along our route tomorrow is good for the first 4 hours then scattered rain. That should get us out of St Louis and through Kansas City. After that it is all open highway to the Rocky Mountains!! On AK1 the worse days ride was through South Dakota in a strong south wind. Bike was jumping from lane to lane and passing trucks was exciting. We are going through Nebraska this time so hope to have a better ride this time.
That's it for today. Going to brunch shortly (Bloody Maries! I never learn my lesson. Next post should be at the end of the ride tomorrow (if I have the strength).
Glad your on schedule and arrived safely in St. Louis. If you complete the Iron Butt you are a much better man than me! Barry Arnold
