Day 1 - Iron Butt

We made it but it was not easy.

1038 miles in 16 1/2 hours. We left St Louis at 6:02 am and arrived in Rawlins, WY at 10:26 pm (Both Central time). The weather was great all the way with just a sprinkle one time. As we got to Cheyenne, WY we still needed another 100 miles to make the 1000 so we headed up the mountain pass. Cheyenne is 6000 ft but we eventually reached 8650 ft and very cold but we had stopped to put on a light jacket. It was not enough to stay warm but didn't want to have to stop to get warmer gear out of bag. We reached Rawlins and hoped to get a beer and some dinner. Of course everything closes at 10 pm so I ate an energy bar from my bag and what was left in my bottle of Gatorade on the bike. Great celebration.

We are both worn out. We rode non-stop except for 8 fuel stops, a quick Subway and a sausage biscuit that I stuffed down for breakfast. Through Nebraska (it must be 600 miles long) we rode 75-80 most of the time. In Wyoming it was starting to get dark the last hour and we were riding at 75 in the mountains to get to Rawlins.

I am glad we accomplished this but would never do it again. This was the 2nd time for Jim so many thanks helping me get mine. The next 2 days to Bellingham, WA won't be as bad now. We have 1200 miles to go so 600 mile days ahead. That still requires some aggressive riding but not like 1000 miles.

More details later, too tired right now.
